The Amika Arbitration and Mediation Council (AAMC) was established in pursuance of the recommendations of the Honourable Justice Sri Krishna Committee to institutionalise arbitration in India, serving as a dedicated wing of Amika, a society for alternative dispute resolution.

Built on a foundation of professionals with decades of national and international experience, AAMC is committed to creating accessible justice through modern, alternative methods. Our institutional credibility is underscored by our invitation from the Rajya Sabha committee to provide recommendations on the Mediation Bill 2021, and by our arbitration rules, which are both based on and approved by UNCITRAL.

At the heart of AAMC is our founder, Smt. G Jyothi Rao, who brings over three decades of expertise in both court litigation and ADR. A prolific writer and renowned public speaker, she is widely recognized for her pro-bono work for women and her distinguished service with the Delhi Legal Aid Services Authority. Supporting her is Dr. P. Madhava Rao, an international senior governance and statebuilding expert who served through UNDP, USAID, and IDLO the governments in Afghanistan, Iraq, Jordan, Kenya, Mauritius, Myanmar, Nepal, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, Uzbekistan, and Zambia. Advised on access to justice, alternative dispute resolution, and governance sector reforms. Back in India, he has been a senior quasi-judicial authority for over two decades.

Operating from our state-of-the-art facility conveniently located on the main Vijayawada road in Vanasthalipuram, Hyderabad, AAMC has become a household name across the Telugu states for resolving family, property, MSME, business, and financial disputes. Following the enactment of the Mediation Act 2023, AAMC is proud to serve as a designated Mediation Institution and Service Provider, as well as an Arbitration Institution under the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996. Why AAMC is Essential: Addressing India’s Judicial Challenges

The current judicial landscape in India is characterized by the mounting overload of work, increasing case numbers, and severe pendency. This situation necessitates robust alternative dispute resolution methods.

The Legislative Context:

  • Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996: Enacted to facilitate the early settlement of disputes by arbitration.
  • Code of Civil Procedure (CPC), 1908 (Section 89(1)): Mandates that courts must refer disputes to arbitration, mediation, judicial settlement, or Lok Adalats if elements of settlement are present.
  • Commercial Courts Act, 2015 (Section 12A): Makes pre-institution mediation mandatory for commercial disputes.
  • Mediation Act, 2023: A significant development in the Indian legal framework, on which AMIKA was invited to offer suggestions and revisions to the Parliamentary Committee on Mediation.
  • MSME Act, 2006: AAMC fulfills the requirements of an ‘Institution’ for arbitration and conciliation defined by the MSME Act, 2006, for referring the cases under section 18(3).
  • NITI Aayog: AAMC follows the NITI Aayog guidelines on the online dispute resolution(ODR) for the disputants who cannot physically attend the AAMC courtrooms.

Taking guidance from these legislative imperatives, and in pursuance of the Justic Sri Krishna Committee’s recommendations, AMIKA was established as a registered society for ADR, focusing on out-of-court settlements. AMIKA is also registered as an NGO with NITI Aayog, Government of India. Amika has been listed as an Arbitration Institution in India by the International Council for Commercial Arbitration(ICCA) and by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL). Amika is also a member of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).
